Title:Establishing a high-impact opportunistic breast arterial calcification screening program with AI software and it’s potential long-term benefits in detecting early signs of cardiovascular disease

Oral Presentation

Abstract

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of death in women despite significant advances in diagnostics and treatments.  Delays in diagnosis and treatment, as well as undertreatment, contribute to morbidity and mortality.
Breast Arterial Calcification (BAC) is a calcium build up in the arteries of the breast, which has been linked to an increased risk for CVD in women.  For example, recent study in the Journal of American College of Cardiology demonstrated a ~3x increase in each of myocardial infarction, heart failure and mortality, as well a 2.5x increase in stroke for those with BAC.  BAC is a common incidental finding in screening mammography.  Reporting of BAC and related care coordination can trigger early follow up evaluation, monitoring and early treatment of CVD in women by offering important and personalized risk stratification information at minimal cost without additional time and radiation.
Mammo Enhance is a program launched by Radiology Partners that uses a FDA-cleared, artificial intelligence (AI) based software intended to detect the presence or absence of BAC. Through the Mammo Enhance program, BAC will additionally be graded for severity in screening mammograms by the intehttps://ai-medicalcongress.com/index.phprpreting breast radiologist. Such an opportunistic screening program can lead to better management of CVD, improved morbidity and mortality associated with CVD and reduced cost for the healthcare system.
This talk is intended to provide a summary of the launch of an opportunistic BAC screening program with AI software, its clinical implications, and potential long-term benefits to the patients from a cardiovascular risk disease stand-point.
